Finding the best Provigil dosage depends on various factors including age, physical condition, allergies, other medications one may be prescribed, and the condition for which the medication is being taken.
What Is Provigil?
Provigil is used to enhance wakefulness, alertness and focus and is prescribed for adults with sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or shift work sleep disorder.
It is thought to work by interacting with the brain's natural chemicals (known as neurotransmitters) that control sleep and alertness.
As a result, it is also being increasingly used to boost focus for adults suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as it works on parts of the brain responsible for ADHD symptoms that contribute to hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsive behavior.
The recommended dose of Provigil is 200 mg given once a day. For patients with narcolepsy it is typically taken as a single dose in the morning.
The typical max dose is 400 mg per day but this is rare and most studies indicate that there is no significant additional benefit to exceeding 200 mg daily.
For adults with shift work disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD), it should be taken approximately 1 hour prior to the start of their work shift.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not take before going to sleep or near bedtime as it has stimulant properties.
If it is close to your normal bedtime or close to your next dose, you may wait until the next dosage time.
Do not take double doses to make up for a missed dose.
Do not alter your dose of Provigl without first consulting with your doctor. Always take this medication exactly as prescribed under the supervision of a doctor.
Be sure to attend all of your medication monitoring appointments with your prescribing doctor so that they may monitor your progress. Direct all questions to your doctor; become as informed as possible about what you are putting into your body.
Do not exceed the dosage guidelines. Notify your doctor right away if you experience any severe or unusual side effects while taking Provigil.
