Modafinil side effects may include back pain or back stiffness, diarrhea, lightheadedness, headache, upset stomach, nervousness, runny nose, and sleep disturbances that may include insomnia or excessive sleep.

More rare but severe side effects of Modafinil may be indicative of a potential allergic reaction such as skin rash or skin irritation, hives, itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, tightness in the chest, and irregular heartbeat.

Keep in mind, however, that severe reactions only occur in a small number of users.

Taking Modafinil can also result in fever, chills, anxiety, depressed or low mood, psychotic thoughts or thoughts not based in reality, confusion, hallucinations, mouth sores, and possible swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue.

What Is Modafinil?

Modafinil, also known as Provigil, is a prescription medication used to treat narcolepsy and shift work sleep disorders. Because it enhances wakefulness and attention, it is also used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It works on the chemicals in the brain that control sleep and wakefulness.

Overdose Risks

Indications of potential overdose may include insomnia, mood changes, agitation, restlessness, confusion, hallucinations, tremors, chest pain, and severe diarrhea.

Report all side effects, no matter how minor, to your prescribing doctor right away.

If you experience an allergic reaction or develop serious or life-threatening side effects listed above please report them to your doctor right away. 

If you experience a severe reaction while taking this medication, you should seek emergency medical attention in order to stabilize your symptoms. This is especially important if you experience any abnormal heart rate, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of any body parts, hallucinations, confusion, etc. 

Once you are discharged from the hospital emergency room, follow up with your prescribing doctor to inform them of your situation.

Helpful Tips

Always take this medication exactly as prescribed by your medical doctor; this will a long way in reducing potential severe reactions. Do not skip doses, or take a double dose in order to make up for a missed dose.

Never share your medication with others; never sell your medications. It is illegal, particularly in the case of legally controlled substances. 

Never take any prescription medication that is not prescribed for you. Ask questions if you have concerns, and always attend your medication monitoring appointments.
