Concerta Weight Loss
Does Concerta Cause Weight Loss? Find Out Here...
As a doctor who treats ADHD, Concerta weight loss is a common concern for those taking this medication. What Is Concerta? Concerta (methylphenidate extended release) is a stimulant medication used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also referred to as ADD or ADHD. Weight Loss As A Side Effect Weight loss is a fairly common side effect of all stimulant substances. In studies of adults taking Concerta, up to 6.5 percent of those taking it lost weight, compared to 3.3 percent of those taking a placebo or sugar pill.
For teens, however, the research regarding weight loss is less clear, but slow weight gain is sometimes a concern. In addition, loss of appetite is a reported side effect in as many as 4 percent of children taking Concerta. Keep in mind that although weight loss may be a desirable side effect for some children and teens, too much weight loss can be a problem for bodies that are still growing. This medications should not be abused for weight loss purposes.
How To Maintain Weight While Taking Concerta
Some of my patients wait until after they eat breakfast and other meals before taking Concerta so their appetite is not disrupted. If you notice that you or your child seems to be experiencing dramatic weight loss while taking this medication, consult with your doctor. They may be able to adjust dosages, medication times, meal times, or try a new ADHD medication with fewer side effects.
Conclusion
This medication should only be taken under the direct supervision of a doctor. As a result, relay any questions or concerns to your healthcare provider and remember to attend regular medication monitoring sessions.
